Story time in two languages
Maestra Nuñez reads to the class, and the room listens in English and Spanish. What a picture book teaches about language, patience and belonging.

Maestra Nuñez, our lead teacher, is reading a picture book to a group of children gathered close around her. Some are leaning in to see the page, some are waiting for the next one, and the whole group is quiet in the way a room is only quiet when the story is good.
Spanish is not a subject at SWREA that happens on Wednesdays. It is part of how the room talks, in greetings, songs, the calendar and story time, alongside English. A child from an English-only home hears Spanish every day from the first week, and a child from a Spanish-speaking home hears their own language from a teacher who shares it.
A reading circle also teaches things that are not reading. Sitting close without crowding, waiting for the page to turn, listening while someone else answers the question. Montessori calls this grace and courtesy, and it is taught as deliberately as phonics.

What this shows
Language
Spanish and English every day, in stories, songs and conversation, so children from both kinds of home grow in both languages.
Character
Grace and courtesy, taught directly: how to listen, wait your turn and share a small space with a group.
See it for yourself.
Visits run Tuesday to Friday while classes are in session and last about an hour.
More from the classroom
Painting side by side
Two children, one table, a row of paintings drying on the windowsill. What art at a Montessori school teaches about sharing materials and finishing work.
Word cards on the reading rug
How reading starts at SWREA: a child, a rug and a set of word cards. Phonics from the first day, built with the hands before it is written on paper.
Isopods under the magnifying glass
Lab coats, goggles and a classroom habitat: how SWREA's youngest scientists start with observation, and why that is the heart of the Research Institute of Planet Earth.
